Warning: Certain Gel Nail Polish Removers Contain Banned Ingredient Methylene Chloride

The FDA has recently found that several cosmetic products marketed as gel nail polish removers contain methylene chloride, a hazardous ingredient prohibited in cosmetics under federal law (21 CFR 700.19). Methylene chloride — a volatile, colorless liquid used industrially in paint removers and metal cleaning — poses serious health risks, including cancer.

Alarmingly, some products fail to list methylene chloride on their labels, or they may disguise it under names like dichloromethane or methyl bichloride. Consumers are urged to avoid these products and consult healthcare professionals or the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) if they suspect exposure.

The FDA tested and confirmed methylene chloride in the following products, all originating from China:

  • AL’IVER® Nail Polish Quick Gel Remover – 77.1%
  • AL’IVER® Professional MAGIC REMOVER – 83.6%
  • AIBRIT Gel Nail Polish Remover – 92.7%
  • BesTby Gel Nail Polish Remover – 87.1%
